  • Colima city is the capitol of Colima state, situated in an elevated interior valley near the base of the Volcano of Fire. It has a beautiful historical downtown, with a large Zocalo, Cathedral, Government Palace, and state museum. The Best Western Ceballos hotel, across from the Zocalo, was built in the 1800's and is a superb place to stay.

  • Colima is one of the smallest states in Mexico, but it has huge volcanos, tremendous agricultural production, and a rich history. Most of the electricity for the surrounding states is generated in Manzanillo, which is also Mexico's largest port on the Pacific Ocean.

  • The Colima volcano is considered to be potentially the most destructive of the nine volcanoes located in central Mexico. There are two peaks, one active and one dormant, three miles apart. We drove up and got some great pictures of a minor eruption. This satellite photo from Google Earth shows Colima City clearly on its flanks.

The sheltered coral reef and gently sloping sandy beach is perfect for snorkeling, with a spectacular underwater vista of irridescent multi-colored fish species.
